Imtiaz Ali wasn’t sure of casting Diljit Dosanjh in Amar Singh Chamkila: “Now, I really can't imagine anybody else doing it”

Netflix recently unveiled the much-anticipated trailer for its upcoming musical extravaganza, Amar Singh Chamkila, directed and written by filmmaker Imtiaz Ali. Scheduled for release on April 12, 2024, the film stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles, promising an electrifying portrayal of the iconic Punjabi singer duo, Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot. However, in a surprising revelation, director Imtiaz Ali shared his initial doubts regarding the casting of Diljit as the legendary Amar Singh Chamkila.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Ali confessed, “I wasn't sure whether it's going to work out with Diljit for some reason. I thought he might not be able to do it, etc.”

Despite his initial reservations, Imtiaz Ali's perception changed drastically after meeting Diljit Dosanjh in person. Ali revealed, “So I didn't approach him in the beginning, but it's a little later that I did. The moment I spoke to him, it was just like a different chapter.” Ali further emphasized his conviction, stating, “Now it's a sure shot thing, and now I really can't imagine anybody else doing it.”

The film charts the untold true story of Punjab’s original rockstar of the masses, the highest record-selling artist of his time, who emerged from the shadows of poverty and rose to the heights of popularity in the 80s due to the sheer power of his music, angering many on the way, which finally led to his assassination at a young age of 27.

The film is produced by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films. Amar Singh Chamkila will be released on April 12.
