Yeh Prem Mol Liya song launch: Sooraj Barjatya reveals “There was a joy in picturizing songs lasting three antaras…me, Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar are the LAST batch of directors who saw…”

Sooraj Barjatya, Himesh Reshammiya, Ayushmann Khurrana, Sharvari and producer Mahaveer Jain attended the title song launch of their film, Yeh Prem Mol Liya, at Mumbai’s iconic Royal Opera House. The kind-hearted and humble Sooraj Barjatya went down memory lane and revealed some fascinating anecdotes.

Sooraj Barjatya said, “Earlier, the makers used to set the choreography and would then plan the music accordingly. This happened not just in Indian cinema but also in the West. I did that too. In Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994), the entire sequence of joota chori was choreographed first. We showed the choreography to the composers (Raam-Laxman), who then composed the music. Similarly, we first choreographed the gulel shot in ‘Didi Tera Deewana’ first. Then the music followed.”

He further said, “There was a certain joy in picturizing songs with three antaras. The shoots would go on for several days. Sometimes, we would wonder, gaane ka shoot shuru kahan se karein. For a director, that itself was a challenge. I remember reading in a book on Guru Dutt ji that he waited for two days at the NSCI Club to capture the exact moment he wanted for the opening shot of the song ‘Thandi Hawa Kali Ghata’, featuring Madhubala ji. There was a joy in that entire process.”

He also remarked, “I think me, Adi (Aditya Chopra) and Karan (Karan Johar) are the last bench of directors who saw 100 musicians together in Bombay Lab. They used to rehearse first and then go for recording. I have seen Lata Mangeshkar ji touch the feet of musicians and then go for recordings. Woh ek joy hota tha.” He turned to Himesh Reshammiya and said, “Ek aisi film banayenge, Himesh ji!”

Yeh Prem Mol Liya releases in cinemas on November 27.
